Quantitative data specialist for the social sciences at Georgia State University
Georgia State University is looking for a quantitative data specialist for the social sciences. The position will be based within the downtown Library’s Research and Engagement Appartement.
Position and Responsibilities
The Georgia State University Library (Atlanta Campus) seeks a highly-motivated, dynamic, and innovative professional to help build the Library’s support for quantitative data analysis across the social sciences. The position collaborates with members of the Research Data Services Team and other librarians in providing data outreach and support across the university. This support may include instruction in methodologies and tools, especially STATA, SAS, SPSS and/or R, and analysis and visualization of data. The position will serve as a liaison librarian and content specialist for assigned academic departments depending on the successful candidate’s background and experience.
The successful candidate has a broad understanding of scholarly information across multiple social science fields, and connects researchers and learners with information and resources both within and beyond the physical library. The individual works successfully with campus partners across departments and institutes, and seeks to build strong transdisciplinary relationships with faculty in these programs, in order to further both research and student learning. The successful candidate is committed to students’ academic success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Based within the downtown Library’s Research and Engagement Department, this position is part of the growing Research Data Services Team which offers data support to researchers at all levels. The successful candidate is well versed in the research lifecycle, with an understanding of the processes of conducting literature reviews; analyzing, organizing, and preparing quantitative research data; and presenting research findings and raw data for publication and reuse. In addition, the successful candidate maintains an awareness of federal agency requirements regarding data management, as well as the broader scholarly communication and curation issues associated with open data initiatives. This position facilitates collaboration with social science faculty in grant-related activities, including identifying grant opportunities, and providing library related services to fulfill grant requirements. The successful candidate serves as a member of the library faculty (non-tenure track), holds faculty rank, and is expected to engage in service and scholarly activities.

- ALA-accredited Master’s in Library/Information Science and/or relevant graduate degree in a related field
- Experience analyzing, organizing, and preparing quantitative research data and/or assisting researchers with quantitative research data needs
- Experience with quantitative data analysis tools, such as STATA, SAS, SPSS, or R
- Experience providing instruction or group training
- Awareness of the research lifecycle, with an understanding of the processes of conducting extensive literature reviews; analyzing, organizing, and preparing quantitative research data; and presenting research findings and raw data for publication and reuse
- Understanding of the changing role of the academic library in higher education
- Excellent technology skills and ability to learn new ones quickly
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work collegially, cooperatively, and independently with varied groups in a complex organization and function collaboratively in a rapidly-changing team environment
- Ability to pass a background check
- Additional graduate degree (Ph.D. in a social science preferred)
- Experience working in an academic or special library
- Teaching experience or experience leading group workshops
- Grant writing experience
- Knowledge of federal agency requirements regarding data management plans
Minimum salary of $50,000 – $60,000 for 12 months commensurate with the candidate’s education and experience.
Appointment at a faculty rank [Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor], on a contract renewal basis.
