About

ProgedoIR* is the national infrastructure for quantitative social sciences data and is part of the French national roadmap for research infrastructures. Backed by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, Progedo upholds the principles of open science, data quality and cross-country data comparability.

ProgedoIR* is a CNRS Support and Research Unit (UAR 2506) with a team of about a dozen permanent staff and a large network of national and international partners.

Missions

ProgedoIR* is structured around four main priorities:

  • Preserving, documenting and making available relevant data for quantitative social sciences to facilitate replication, reuse and training according to the FAIR principles;
  • Coordinating France’s participation in European research infrastructures within its scope and promoting its participation in comparative international research projects;
  • Monitoring and promoting the latest standards and best practices for research data management, as well as data collection and processing, in compliance with international standards and with the goal of fostering innovation and improvements in quality;
  • Participating in the coordination and promotion of academic stakeholders of quantitative methods in social science.

Position

ProgedoIR* has established itself as a benchmark organisation, with an established presence at the European, international, national and local levels.

At the European and international level, ProgedoIR* manages France’s participation in three European research infrastructures: two listed on the ESFRI roadmap as landmarks, ESS-ERIC and SHARE-ERIC, and a third listed as a project, GGP.

At the national level, ProgedoIR* is the driving force behind the network of collaborations historically forged as part of Réseau Quetelet, including in particular the French Institute for Demographic Studies (INED), the Secure Data Access Center (CASD), and the Center for Social-Political Data (CDSP) at Sciences Po. Through its data repository, Quetelet-Progedo, ProgedoIR* distributes more than 1,600 data sets from both official statistics and research.

The international surveys are carried out by ProgedoIR*’s close partners, INED and the CDSP at Sciences Po, as well as the University of Paris Dauphine PSL. ProgedoIR* maintains close ties with other national research infrastructures, first and foremost with Huma-Num IR* and the Réseau national des MSH (National Network of MSHs) and their associated centers. It is also part of the national Research Data Gouv ecosystem as a Thematic Reference Center.ProgedoIR* has established a network of University Platforms for Data, hosted by the MSHs and distributed all over France. At present, there are 17 and they support ProgedoIR* in advancing data literacy in France.
